Oct 16, 2017

FAYETTEVILLE Cumberland County Department of Public Health Interim Health Director Rod Jenkins, has completed the Jim Bernstein Community Health Leadership Fellow Program for 2015-17.

The fellows program is administered by the Foundation for Health Leadership & Innovation. Its purpose is to develop and prepare future leaders to work in and improve the health of rural and underserved communities in North Carolina.

Jenkins completed the required training in July of this year, and received his recognition earlier this month. The training, conducted over the past three years, included the core elements of the program – leadership, partnership, rural life and the N.C. health system. The training has prepared him to:

  • Have a clear understanding of rural and underserved community needs

  • Demonstrate leadership skills to engage and collaborate with others to improve the health and economic status of a given community

  • Be prepared and inspired to become a confident, highly-skilled and influential individual

“The Bernstein Fellowship was a rich, robust, and rewarding experience. I made lifelong friends with the other Fellows and learned much about the health care system in the State of North Carolina. It was an honor to represent Cumberland County and our great Health Department.,” Jenkins said.

Jim Bernstein founded the NC Office of Rural Health and was the first president of the N.C. Foundation for Advanced Health Programs, which is now named the Foundation for Health Leadership & Innovation. He and former Gov. Jim Hunt formed the foundation in 1982.

Jenkins is a graduate of The Citadel-The Military College of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina and served in the South Carolina Army National Guard from 1994-2002. Jenkins has been the County’s deputy health director since 2011 and has been serving as the interim health director since July. He was previously an assistant county manager in Robeson County.
