Board of Health Receives Update on School Nurse Positions

Aug 29, 2018

During its regular meeting Aug. 21, the Board of Health was updated on the hiring of additional school nurses, one of the board’s annual goals. School nurses for six of seven new positions included in the fiscal year 2019 budget have been selected.

The board received a report on the Health Department’s involvement in the inaugural FayOne back-to-school event on Aug. 18 at the Crown Arena. Three medical providers and three nurses from the Health Department checked 414 school-aged children for scalp lesions, ringworm, and lice before the students got in line to receive free hairstyles or haircuts.

In addition, the board heard about focus groups that were formed as part of the current Community Health Assessment (CHA) process. Throughout June and July, the Department of Public Health, in conjunction with Cape Fear Valley Health, conducted six focus group sessions in various areas of the county. In addition to the focus groups, 1,265 surveys were completed as part of the data collection process.

Data from the surveys can be found at healthenc.org. The final 2018 CHA will be submitted to the North Carolina Division of Public Health in March 2019 and will also be available on the Cumberland County Department of Public Health webpage.

In other discussion, Board of Health members reviewed current Board vacancies and met four candidates. Currently, the board has openings for an engineer, pharmacist, and registered nurse. At the end of calendar year 2018, there will be openings for the dentist and veterinarian positions. Interested county residents may apply online at co.cumberland.nc/commissioners/boardapplication.aspx.

The next Board of Health meeting is Sept. 18. Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the 3rd floor Board Room of the Public Health Center located at 1235 Ramsey St, Fayetteville. For more information, call 910-433-3705.
