Health Department Participates in Umoja Festival, Offers Immunization Vouchers

The Cumberland County Department of Public Health is partnering with Cape Fear Valley Health, Cumberland County Schools and Southern Regional Area Health Education Center (SR-AHEC) to provide back-to-school health services at this year’s Umoja Festival, Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Smith Recreation Center at Seabrook Park, 1520 Slater Ave.

During the festival, the Health Department will issue vouchers for students to receive immunizations at no- to low-cost at the Health Department’s Immunization Clinic, located at 1235 Ramsey St. The vouchers will be valid from Aug. 25 through Sept.7.

Additionally, the Immunization Clinic will be open Saturday, Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Normal hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with extended hours until 7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. Appointments are not required at the clinic.

Cape Fear Valley and SR-AHEC will also provide free school health assessments and sports physicals during the Umoja Festival.

The Umoja Festival, now in its 26th year, is an annual African American family festival. It promotes both unity and education about African American history and culture.
