Department of Public Health Names Deputy Director

Jun 02, 2020

The Cumberland County Department of Public Health has named Ashley Curtice as the new deputy health director. The position has been vacant since January.

Curtice has served Cumberland County for four years in several roles at the Health Department. She began her career with Cumberland County as the regional tobacco control manager. As manager, she provided technical assistance for tobacco prevention and control for a 10-county region and supervised the regional youth tobacco coordinator.

In October 2019, she joined the Health Department’s senior leadership team as the public health administrator.

As the health administrator, Curtice supervised health education, family care coordination programs, regional tobacco control, positive parenting program and a $900,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for a comprehensive opioid abuse site program. Curtice is also the public information officer and the agency accreditation coordinator for the Health Department. Curtice has served on several COVID-19 work groups during the pandemic.

As the deputy director, Curtice will lead the day-to-day operations of the Health Department and continue to serve as the public information officer.

“Ms. Curtice’s educational background, work history in local health departments and public health leadership experience make her well suited for the Cumberland County Health Department Deputy Director position,” said Health Director Dr. Jennifer Green.

Curtice earned a bachelor’s degree in community health education from UNC-Wilmington and a master’s degree in public health education from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. Curtice also graduated from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tobacco Control Leadership and Sustainability School and completed the N.C. Public Health Association’s Emerging Leaders Program.

Curtice is a native of Fort Knox, Kentucky, but grew up in Bryson City, N.C. She was the public health educator for Forsyth County before coming to Cumberland County.
