Receives Prestigious Award
Wilmington, NC- Tom Miriello, Area Director for the Cumberland County Mental Health Center was presented the Year 2000 Lifetime Achievement Award by the NC Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. The award was presented at the Foundation's Annual Summer School at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington. The Lifetime Achievement Award is the only award presented by the Foundation. It is given to leaders in the field of Substance Abuse who have demonstrated leadership, commitment, dedication and excellence in the advancement of services for addicted persons in North Carolina.
Mr. Miriello's distinguished career in the substance abuse field has spanned more than 30 years. During that time he has served in leadership roles as President of Addiction Professionals of North Carolina, founding member of the NC Substance Abuse Professional Certification Board and member of the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors. Mr. Miriello served as State Director of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services for the North Carolina Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Abuse Services from 1982 until 1985. He served as State Delegate to the White House Conference for a Drug-Free America. He has been the Area Director for Cumberland County Mental Health Center since 1992. He is a Certified Clinical Addictions Specialist and Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor.
According to North Carolina Foundation Board President, Sharon Yates, "Tom Miriello's accomplishments are well known throughout our field in North Carolina. He has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and advocacy abilities in the addictions arena. He has earned the reputation of always going out of his way to work for better substance abuse services in this state. He has the respect and admiration of his peers. He is truly deserving of this award."
