For Immediate Release October 12, 2000 --Press Release from Sheriff Butler--
Cumberland County, NC; Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler announced today that a Cumberland County Sheriff's Office School Crossing Guard was struck and killed by a car this morning, shortly before 8 a.m. in front of Cape Fear High School on Clinton Road in eastern Cumberland County. The guard, Maxine McNeill (58 YOA) of 2155 Downing Road in Fayetteville, had been employed by the Sheriff's Office as a crossing guard since August, 1998 and had always been assigned to the Cape Fear High School school zone. McNeill was at the school zone of Cape Fear High School where she was struck by an Oldsmobile, which was driven by William Leslie Horne, 42 YOA, of 388 Irvin Road in Autryville. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Sheriff's Office are investigating the accident.
