Library to Offer
Digital Video Display Discs (DVDs)
The Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center (CCPL&IC) will offer DVDs beginning Tuesday, January 16. Over 300 titles, including new releases, will be available to the public at the Headquarters Library only.
Individuals will be required to have a valid CCPL&IC library card to borrow the DVDs. As many as four titles may be checked out at one time for seven days. Once checked out from the Headquarters Library, DVDs may be returned to any CCPL&IC location.
The DVD collection was purchased using a portion of the library system’s current video/audiovisual budget. With adequate funding, the system plans to purchase additional titles to offer at other CCPL&IC locations.
DVDs have several advantages over videotapes. They are not as easily damaged and produce higher quality sound and picture. Languages other than English, such as French and Spanish, can be selected for listening during viewing and new releases in the DVD format tend to be less expensive than in the videotape format.
Providing this technology, currently available in area video stores, meets a goal of the library system’s FY 2001–2005 Long Range Plan which states that Cumberland County residents will have timely access to materials and programs that support and enrich their leisure, developmental, and recreational interests.For more information, contact Amanda L.
