Welcomes Author Eric Schlosser

Fayetteville, NC—Eric Schlosser, author of the best selling book Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All American Meal, will speak at the library’s 2nd Annual Guest Author program to be held at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre on Monday, November 5 at 7:30 pm. The program is co–sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Library Endowment Trust of the Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc.

Fast Food Nation, published in early 2001, is an account of the fast food industry as investigated by Schlosser for several years. In 1998, his two–part article on the subject in Rolling Stone magazine generated more mail than any other item the magazine had run in years. Schlosser has interviewed slaughterhouse workers, cattle ranchers, potato farmers, fast food employees, founders and franchisees, and families who have lost a loved one to food poisoning. From his extensive research and travels for the book, he has unearthed a wealth of little–known, often unsettling truths about the fast food industry.

Schlosser is a native of New York City and a 1981 graduate of Princeton University, where he studied American history. After Princeton, he attended Oxford University where he studied late–nineteenth–century British imperial history.

In addition to writing for Rolling Stone, Schlosser has contributed to The New Yorker and has been a correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly since 1996. He has won a National Magazine Award and has received a Sidney Hillman Foundation Award for Reporting. His work has been nominated for several other National Magazine Awards and for the Loeb Award for business journalism.

Tickets will be required for admittance to the lecture at a cost of $10 per person (tax–deductible). Books will be available for purchase and autographing immediately following the presentation.

A benefit reception will also be held at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre at 6:00 pm on November 5. The cost of the reception is $100 ($67 tax–deductible) for single or $150 for couples ($104 tax–deductible). Tickets to the lecture and a signed copy of Fast Food Nation are included in the cost of the reception.
