Due to hazardous forest fire conditions, the N.C. Forest Service and Cumberland County Emergency Services are canceling all burning permits and prohibiting all open burning until future notice.
The N.C. Department of Agriculture Consumer Services, which oversees the state Forest Service, is using authority under the law (NC G.G. 106-944 and 106-946) to ban open burning in 26 counties. The NCDACS burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling.
The Cumberland County Fire Marshal has issued a burning ban countywide on all open burning in accordance with the County Fire Prevention Ordinance section 6.2-26 and the North Carolina Fire Code section 307.1.1 (2018 edition). This addition to the NCDACS burning ban applies to fires within 100 feet of a dwelling. It is extremely important to refrain from all open burning as we are experiencing such dry weather.
“Emergency Services made this decision based on our rating for fire danger and how hot and dry the weather has been,” said Fire Marshal Kevin Lowther. “Cumberland County currently is at a high risk.”
Residents can monitor the county’s rating for fire danger here. The map is based on a National Fire Danger Rating System parameter describing environmental conditions that could cause fires to ignite and spread.
