The Cumberland County Department of Social Services will begin accepting applications for the North Carolina Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) from all qualified households beginning Jan. 2.

The Cumberland County Department of Social Services will begin accepting applications for the North Carolina Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) from all qualified households beginning Jan. 2. In December, only households with elderly or disabled persons could apply for LIEAP. The program helps qualified families with their heating costs.

There are various ways for Cumberland County residents to apply for LIEAP. Applications can be made in person from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at DSS, located at 1225 Ramsey St., Fayetteville. Applications can be picked up, or downloaded, and submitted as follows:

  • Mail to P.O. Box 2429, Fayetteville, NC 28302-2429. To download an application, go to www.ccdssnc.com and click on the Economic Services tab. Under the tab, click the Energy Programs link.
  • Fax to 910-677-2885.

Applications must be completed and signed.

Households may apply for LIEAP from Jan. 2 through March 31, or until funds are exhausted. Households with Native Americans age 18 or older must apply through the Lumbee Tribe at www.lumbeetribe.com.

LIEAP is a federally funded program that provides a one-time vendor payment directly to the utility company to help eligible households pay their heating bills during cold-weather months. Household income must not exceed 130 % of the poverty level. All households must apply for LIEAP; there are no automatic approvals.

In order to determine eligibility, the following verifications must be provided:

  • Identification of head of household
  • Social Security number for all household members
  • Copy of heating bill
  • Gross income received in prior month
  • Childcare expenses and legal support obligations paid in the prior month

Call 910-677-2821 for more information about LIEAP.
