FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Community Development has placed a temporary pause on accepting new referrals for the Homeless Prevention and Stabilization Voucher Program. The pause is necessary due to the significant number of referrals received in recent weeks.
Residents who have already gone through Coordinated Entry and were referred to the program do not need to call Community Development. County staff are contacting referred individuals in the order referrals were received to schedule appointments, verify documentation and determine eligibility.
“Our team is working through the existing queue as quickly as possible,” Community Development Interim Director Tye Vaught said. “Once the current referrals are processed and if funding remains, we will resume accepting new referrals.”
What Residents Should Know
- The pause applies only to new referrals.
- If a resident was referred through Coordinated Entry already, they will be contacted by staff.
- Referred residents do not need to call Community Development to check status; this helps staff move faster through the queue.
- Updates on the program’s status will be shared on the county’s official communication channels.
- When the queue is cleared and if funds are still available, the county will announce when new referrals can be accepted again.
About the Program
The Homeless Prevention and Stabilization Voucher Program provides short-term, needs-based assistance to help eligible residents prevent homelessness or stabilize housing.
This pilot program is part of a broader effort by Cumberland County to reduce homelessness and improve access to essential services. The Board of Commissioners approved $250,000 for the program in August 2025 following recommendations from Cumberland County Community Development and local housing advocates.
