Meetings Scheduled on Disaster Recovery Block Grant Funding

FAYETTEVILLE – North Carolina Emergency Management, the Governor’s Office and the Department of Commerce have allocated approximately $34.7 million in Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding for projects in Cumberland County as part of Hurricane Matthew recovery. Cumberland County and the City of Fayetteville will host two public meetings to inform residents about proposed projects being considered for the program. The meetings will be Aug. 24 and Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Department of Social Services, 1225 Ramsey St. Based upon the Department of Housing and Urban Development requirements specified in the State CDBG-DR Action Plan, the County and City have identified and prioritized unmet needs in the areas of housing, economic development, infrastructure, resiliency, planning and capacity. The disaster recovery effort will assist residents who qualify under HUD low-to-moderate income requirements who experienced major to severe damage because of Hurricane Matthew and help mitigate the impact of future disasters. The top priority is assisting low and moderate income families by addressing housing and supportive service needs. This includes projects to repair owner-occupied homes, rental housing, and to provide shelter for the homeless. It is equally important to assist small businesses and farmers who are trying to get back on their feet and to rebuild community and supportive service facilities. The County and City submitted the attached initial plan to the state this month and the formal proposal is due Sept. 15.
