Residents Encouraged to Prepare for Hurricane Idalia; Sign up for Cumberland Alerts

With Hurricane Idalia expected to bring adverse weather conditions to Cumberland County and the surrounding area later this week, Emergency Services encourages residents to sign up for Cumberland Alerts emergency notification system.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – With Hurricane Idalia expected to bring adverse weather conditions to Cumberland County and the surrounding area later this week, Cumberland County Emergency Services encourages residents to make appropriate preparations including signing up for Cumberland Alerts emergency notification system.

Cumberland County is preparing for potential impacts from Hurricane Idalia as it moves north from Florida. Emergency Services staff is monitoring the progress and development of the storm and is communicating with partner agencies about potential response efforts.

Cumberland Alerts is a free alert system that allows residents to receive critical information related to incidents such as severe weather, evacuations, protective actions and more. Notifications can be sent to your home, mobile or business phone, email and by text messages. To sign up for Cumberland Alerts, go to the County’s website at cumberlandcountync.gov and click on the Cumberland Alerts icon at the bottom of the page.

According to the National Weather Services in Raleigh, Hurricane Idalia is expected to strengthen in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and move north toward the Florida Gulf Coast today. Gusty winds and rainfall from this system could affect North Carolina from Wednesday into Thursday, especially across the southern Coastal Plain and Sandhills.

Flooding is possible across southern and eastern portions of central North Carolina from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday evening. Cumberland and surrounding counties are under a Flood Watch through Thursday evening.
