FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Government wishes to share information on White Flag shelter locations that will be open tonight, Tuesday, Jan. 2 for residents who need a place to escape freezing temperatures. The National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures at or below freezing with the wind chill factor overnight and during the early morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 3.
True Vine Ministries will open a White Flag shelter overnight tonight from 6 p.m. until 7 a.m. tomorrow. The True Vine shelter, known as the “J Center,” is located at 5315 Morganton Rd., Fayetteville. Transportation will be provided to the shelter from the Cumberland County Headquarters Library at 300 Maiden Lane, Fayetteville, today between 5:45 and 7:30 p.m. and back to Headquarters Library tomorrow between 7 and 8:45 a.m. Dinner and breakfast will be provided. Cumberland County partners directly with True Vine Ministries to provide White Flag shelter services because True Vine was selected as part of an RFI process in November 2023 to solicit a partner to provide White Flag shelter services. However, Cumberland County also wishes to make residents aware of other White Flag shelter providers in the County, including the following:
The Salvation Army of the Sandhills Region will open a White Flag shelter overnight tonight. The Salvation Army shelter is located at 245 Alexander St., Fayetteville. Intake will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m., following dinner. The shelter will be open from 6:30 p.m. until 7 a.m. tomorrow. The shelter is available to single men, women and families. Cumberland County Emergency Services is closely monitoring weather conditions and is coordinating with Cumberland County Community Development and community partners as they make White Flag shelter determinations and preparations.
With temperatures currently forecasted below freezing multiple nights this week, decisions about operating White Flag shelters each night will be made by host organizations daily. Cumberland County will provide additional information each day in the event shelters are opened that night. Updates will be provided via press release and social media.
