Death Certificates

Certificates for deaths that occur in Cumberland County can be ordered, for a fee, from the Cumberland County Register of Deeds

Fetal death reports (still birth) can be requested from The NC Vital Records office.  Any questions about this process can be directed to NC Vital Records at 919-733-3000.

In accordance with NC General Statute 130A-(90-121), all death records should be filed with the Local Registrar within 5 days of occurrence. After being processed by the Deputy Registrar, copies of these certificates are filed with the Cumberland County Register of Deeds and the original documents are submitted to NC State Vital Records where they are maintained.

What do I need to bring with me?

For death certificates to be filed by someone other than a funeral director:

  • Death Registration form
  • Current ID or valid government issued ID (see acceptable IDs listed below)
  • List of helpful resources- Family Resources

For death certificates filed by a funeral director:

  • Notification of Death (DHHS 2073)
    • Funeral Directors are responsible for filing with Local Registrar within 24 hours of taking custody of deceased; can be sent by fax
  • Burial-Transit Permit (DHHS 1184)
    • Required to transport remains out of NC and must be obtained through Deputy Registrar during business hours or through a Sub-registrar after hours

  • State-issued driver’s license
  • State-issued non-driver photo ID
  • Passport
  • US military ID (with signature)
  • Veteran’s ID card
  • Tribal enrollment card
  • Work authorization card
  • Permanent Resident card

The Health Director serves as the Local Registrar. In accordance with NC General Statute 130A Article 4, all birth and death records should be filed with the Local Registrar within five days of occurrence. The Deputy Registrar receives and processes certificates, making necessary corrections with proper documentation. After being processed by the Deputy Registrar, copies of these certificates are filed with the Cumberland County Register of Deeds and the original documents are submitted to NC State Vital Records Office where they are maintained.
