Tropical Storm Debby Updates Aug. 8: County Reopening & Smith Shelter Closure

Aug 08, 2024

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Emergency Services continues to monitor Tropical Storm Debby. As conditions change, and in anticipation of community needs, the County will reopen all County facilities and departments for normal business hours tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 9, 2024. However, remote work is strongly encouraged for employees who can work from home.

The Little River near Spring Lake, and the Cape Fear River in Fayetteville, are anticipated to reach high flood levels. Emergency Services urges residents who live near potential flood zones to protect their valuables and be prepared for the potential need to evacuate their residence. The County reminds the community to continue to use caution when traveling as some low-lying areas are currently experiencing flooding.

To consolidate resources and serve those with continued flooding impacts, the Smith Recreation Center shelter will close at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 9, 2024.

As of 12 p.m. today, 34 people were in the emergency shelters.

The Ann Street Landfill and all container sites will open for their normal business hours on Friday. Only four-wheel drive vehicles with dump trailers and heavy-duty commercial garbage trucks will be allowed at the Ann Street Landfill until further notice.

Vegetative storm debris should be taken to the Wilkes Road Compost Facility.
