FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – After careful consideration of nine qualified applicants who generously offered to serve the community, in accordance with North Carolina law the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners unanimously appointed Major Johnathan Morgan as Sheriff to complete the unexpired term of Sheriff Ennis Wright.
The Board expressed its heartfelt gratitude to Sheriff Wright for his years of dedicated service to Cumberland County and its citizens. Sheriff Wright retired effective June 30, 2025, after serving as Sheriff since 2017. Sheriff Wright’s service was marked by expanded community outreach, strengthened public trust, and a commitment to fairness and equity.
“Our primary goal throughout this process has been to ensure a smooth transition and continuity of operations within the Sheriff's Office,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman Kirk deViere. “The Board of Commissioners collectively felt that Major Morgan's experience and understanding of current operations and procedures make him uniquely positioned to maintain the high standards of public safety our citizens expect and deserve. We also thank all nine applicants who stepped forward during this time of transition. Their willingness to serve demonstrates the strength of character and commitment to public service that makes our community exceptional.”
“I look forward to continuing to work alongside Sheriff Morgan, just as I did with Sheriff Wright,” said County Manager Clarence Grier. “I am excited for the collaboration ahead as we continue our mission to ensure the safety and well-being of our community.”
The appointment was made during the Board’s August 11, 2025, meeting following interviews with the candidates. Sheriff Morgan will serve the remainder of the current term, which runs through December 2026.
