Emergency Services Becomes Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors

Jul 20, 2021, 14:59 PM by User Not Found

The Cumberland County Emergency Services department is officially a Weather-Ready Nation (WRN) Ambassador. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) granted the department the title on July 15.

The WRN Ambassador initiative is NOAA’s effort to formally recognize organizations and departments that are improving the nation’s readiness, responsiveness and overall resilience against extreme weather, water, and climate events. To be officially recognized as a WRN Ambassador, the Cumberland County Emergency Services Department must work with the National Weather Service to:

  • promoted Weather-Ready Nation messages and themes to their stakeholders,
  • engaged with NOAA personnel on potential collaboration opportunities,
  • shared their success stories of preparedness and resiliency and
  • served as an example by educating employees on workplace preparedness.

“We’re so excited to be recognized for our dedication to telling residents about weather that could impact their lives,” Emergency Management Planner I Laura Smith said. “We’re already recognized as StormReady through the National Weather Service and becoming a WRN Ambassador makes our department that much stronger during severe weather.”

As a WRN Ambassador, the Emergency Services department will serve as a change agent and leader in the community. They will inspire others to be better informed and prepared, help minimize or even avoid the impacts of natural disasters. Emergency Services will also commit to working with NOAA and other Ambassadors to strengthen national resilience against extreme weather. Their initiative will help unify the efforts across government, non-profits, academia, and private industry toward making the nation more ready, responsive, and resilient against extreme environmental hazards.
