Tropical Storm Debby Updates Aug. 8

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Emergency Services encourages residents to use caution if they must travel this morning as Tropical Storm Debby continues to impact the Sandhills region.   

As of 6 a.m. Thursday, there were a total of 43 people and one pet signed into five emergency shelters, which the County opened at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7.  

The County is staffing a non-emergency phone line in the Emergency Operations Center. Residents should call 910-600-7299 for assistance and information. The Communicare behavioral Health crisis hotline is 910-229-5198. 

Cumberland County buildings and offices will be closed today, Thursday, Aug. 8. This includes all Solid Waste landfills and container sites.   

A Flood Watch is in effect for most of central and eastern North Carolina through Friday evening. The storm will bring a threat of heavy rain of 4-8 inches through Friday. Residents living near creeks and rivers are advised to prepare for flooding. A tornado watch is in effect until 1 p.m. today.  

Trees have fallen throughout the county and partial road closures due to flooding have been reported in the Hope Mills area. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph could lead to scattered power outages and downed trees late Thursday and into Friday, especially along and east of the I-95 corridor.

  • Westover Recreation Center (Pet Friendly): 267 Bonanza Dr., Fayetteville
