The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Cape Fear River at the William O. Huske Lock and Dam No. 3, affecting Cumberland and Bladen counties until late Sunday evening, Dec. 31.
FAYETTEVILLE – The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Cape Fear River at the William O. Huske Lock and Dam No. 3, affecting Cumberland and Bladen counties. The flood warning went into effect Wednesday, Dec. 27 at 8:40 p.m. and remains in effect until late Sunday evening, Dec. 31.
As of Wednesday, Dec. 27, the Cape Fear River stage was 36.2 feet, according to the National Weather Service. The river is expected to rise above flood stage this afternoon to a crest of 46.1 feet early Saturday morning. The river is expected to fall below flood stage late Sunday, Dec. 31. The access road for the wildlife boat ramp at Tar Heel Ferry Road may begin to flood. Lowland flooding along both sides of the Cape Fear River will also worsen.
Cumberland County Emergency Services urges residents boating or fishing at the dam to take precaution or avoid recreational activities on the Cape Fear River until the water falls below flood stage. Emergency Services reminds residents to “turn around, don’t drown” when encountering flooded roads.
Residents may sign up for Cumberland Alerts, a free emergency notification system, by going to the Cumberland County website at cumberlandcountync.gov and clicking on the Cumberland Alerts icon.
