County Opens White Flag Shelter and Warming Centers the Week of Dec. 1

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County, in partnership with the City of Fayetteville and community partners, will open a White Flag Shelter and designated warming centers in response to expected below-freezing temperatures.

The weather is forecast to meet criteria for White Flag on Tuesday, Dec. 2 and Thursday, Dec. 3. The weather is forecast to meet criteria for warming centers on Wednesday, Dec. 3 and Friday, Dec. 5. The following locations will be open:

WHITE FLAG SHELTER - DEC. 2 & 4

Cornerstone Christian Empowerment Center

  • Address: 111 N. Bragg Blvd., Spring Lake

  • Hours: 6 p.m.– 8 a.m. (Intake 5:30 – 9 p.m.)

  • Transportation: Shuttle service to and from the Fayetteville Cares Day Resource Center, 128 S. King St.

    • Evening pick-up at 6 p.m.

    • Morning return at 6:30 a.m.

  • Meals: Dinner and breakfast provided.

WARMING CENTERS - DEC. 3 & 5

Cumberland County Department of Social Services - Auxiliary Lobby

  • Address: 1225 Ramsey St., Fayetteville

  • Hours: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Masks or face coverings are encouraged for those with preexisting conditions.

Cumberland County Department of Public Health - First Floor Lobby

  • Address: 1235 Ramsey St., Fayetteville

  • Hours: Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

  • Masks or face coverings are encouraged for those with preexisting conditions.

Cumberland County Public Libraries

  • All eight libraries will open as warming centers.

  • Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) Lobby

The Salvation Army of the Sandhills

  • Address: 220 E. Russell St., Fayetteville

  • Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m.– 6 p.m.

  • When activated as a warming center, The Salvation Army will also offer:

    • Lunch at 12 p.m.

    • Dinner at 5 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, older adults and individuals without reliable heat. Pets should also be brought indoors during freezing temperatures.
