FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Animal Services reminds citizens of the many dogs, cats, puppies and kittens available for adoption at the Animal Shelter. Pets can make a great holiday gift for people who understand and are willing to provide responsible pet ownership.
“We had a very busy November and December, so our shelter is very full,” Animal Services Director Elaine Smith said. “Some of these animals have been through tough times and we would love to see them have a wonderful new home for the holidays.”
Smith recommends pets as a gift only if the recipient understands the tenants of responsible pet ownership. Smith offers advice for people who are considering a shelter pet as a gift.
“If all adults in the household are on board with a new pet, and you’ve done your homework on what your new family member will need, then a pet may make a great present,” Smith said. “But it’s never a good idea to spring a surprise new pet on an unsuspecting loved one. Caring for a pet is a lot of work and they need to be ready for the commitment.”
Adoption fees are $100 for dogs are $70 for cats. The adoption fee covers spay/neuter surgery, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.
The Cumberland County Animal Shelter, located at 4704 Corporation Dr., Fayetteville, is open for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and 1 – 5 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter will be closed for the holidays from Dec. 23 – 27.
