Cumberland County Solid Waste Management teamed up with the non-profit Sustainable Sandhills and the City of Fayetteville to collect 8.74 tons of electronic waste from more than 160 people during an E-waste drive outside Segra Stadium on Nov. 14.
The event was a big success and exceeded the tonnage collected at the 2019 event by almost five times. The purpose of the event was to help residents properly dispose of old or used electronic devices or accessories. Those items could contain toxic or hazardous materials. Proper disposal can help eliminate the amount of E-waste at landfill sites.
“I can’t believe the turnout,” said Solid Waste Management Director Amanda Bader. “The event started at 10 a.m. and we had people lined up well before that time. It was a big drive and was very productive.”
Estimated numbers are listed for various items collected during the event, which involved 18 volunteers from Fayetteville State University’s Green Team and Methodist University’s Environmental and Occupational Management Program plus staff from Sustainable Sandhills, Cumberland County Solid Waste and City of Fayetteville.
