Gas Line Leak Temporarily Closes Camden Road, Residents in Immediate Area Evacuated

Apr 22, 2026

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Emergency officials have responded to a natural gas leak in the area of Camden Road near Rockfish Road after a construction crew struck a natural gas line earlier this morning.

The initial 911 call reporting the incident was received at 10:25 a.m., and road closures began at 10:38 a.m. As a precaution, Camden Road is closed between Rockfish Road and Wipperwill Drive and is expected to remain closed for approximately 24 hours while crews work to secure the area and repair the line. The closest side street within the impacted area is Teeters Road.

Emergency personnel have evacuated several households in the immediate area, and some residents are temporarily sheltering in place. All affected individuals have already been notified. Hazmat teams are on scene, and current air-quality readings remain safe. Due to wind conditions, the odor of natural gas may be noticeable in surrounding neighborhoods. Officials emphasize that emergency crews are actively monitoring the situation and that the odor alone does not indicate danger.

Cumberland County Emergency Services is in contact with Cumberland County Schools to ensure appropriate notifications are made regarding nearby campuses.
