County Facilities to Close Monday at Noon Due to Severe Weather; Board Meetings Rescheduled

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Emergency Services is monitoring a severe weather system expected to move through the area on the afternoon of March 16.

Meetings & County Services

Out of an abundance of caution, the Board of Commissioners events, originally scheduled for Monday, March 16, have been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 17, and will be held at the Historic Courthouse, located at 130 Gillespie St.:

  • State of the County Address – 6 p.m.

  • Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting – 6:45 p.m.

To prioritize the safety of residents and staff, Cumberland County facilities and the Court System will close today, Monday, March 16, at 12 p.m. (noon).

Weather Conditions

Current National Weather Service forecast indicates severe weather across central North Carolina is possible this afternoon and early evening. Potential impacts include:

  • Damaging winds

  • Tornadoes

  • Large hail

  • Frequent lightning

Weather timing and intensity may change as conditions evolve.

White Flag Shelters

The following community partner shelters will open to support residents in need:

The Salvation Army of the Sandhills

  • Address: 245 Alexander St., Fayetteville

  • More Information: Meals provided. The Salvation Army shelter is open to individuals and families and maintains a safe environment for all guests. Security screenings are conducted upon check-in, including verification against the sex offender registry, a breathalyzer test, and metal detection screening.

Cornerstone Christian Empowerment Center

  • Address: 111 N. Bragg Blvd., Spring Lake

  • Hours: 6 p.m.–8 a.m. (Intake: 5:30–9 p.m.)

  • Shuttle service provided to and from the Fayetteville Cares Day Resource Center, 128 S. King St., Fayetteville. Shuttle service will be suspended should conditions worsen.

    • Evening pickup: 5 p.m.

    • Morning return: 7:30 a.m.

  • Dinner and breakfast provided.

Public Safety Reminders

Residents are urged to monitor evolving conditions. 

  • Call 9-1-1 for emergencies.

  • NC 211 can help connect residents to sheltering, food, and emergency resources by dialing 2-1-1 or visiting nc211.org.

Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors and older adults. Pets should be brought indoors during severe weather conditions.
