FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Public Library has updated its visitor guidelines to help ensure all library spaces remain welcoming, safe and comfortable for everyone who visits, effective November 1, 2025.
The updated policies, adopted by the Library Board of Trustees, reflect the library’s continued commitment to maintaining an inclusive, accessible environment that supports learning, connection and safety for all visitors.
“Our libraries are community spaces where everyone belongs,” said Public Library Director Heather Hall. “These updates ensure every visitor, whether a student, parent, job seeker or neighbor seeking warmth and connection, can feel comfortable and respected.”
The new guidelines clarify expectations related to personal belongings, food and drink and appropriate use of library facilities.
The updates do not limit access or change who may visit the library. They simply help maintain clear pathways, protect personal items and preserve clean, welcoming shared spaces for all.
“By following these simple guidelines, we’re creating a safe, inclusive place to explore, connect and learn,” said Hall.
Updated policy changes include:

Health and Hygiene: Bathing, shaving, and washing clothing are no longer permitted inside library facilities.

Child Protection: Children aged seven and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult; youth 15 and under may not remain on library property after closing.

Noise Control and Digital Etiquette: Speakerphones, loud audio and disruptive device use are prohibited. Headphones must be inaudible to others.

Use of Space and Belongings: Personal items must not block pathways or create safety hazards. Unattended belongings may be removed after 15 minutes.
