County Animal Services Announces Temporary Operational Pause

Jan 16, 2026, 16:48 PM by Diane Rice

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Out of an abundance of caution, Cumberland County Animal Services will temporarily pause animal intake and adoptions for approximately two weeks beginning Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, following an increase in animals exhibiting symptoms consistent with an upper respiratory illness.

Several animals recently developed elevated fevers, and all available isolation and overflow spaces are currently in use. While the illness is presently classified as an upper respiratory infection (URI), diagnostic testing has been requested to better understand the cause. Results are expected later this week, at which time operations will be reassessed.

Out of an abundance of caution, during the pause:

  • Intake and adoptions are suspended

  • An off-site adoption event scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17 at PetSmart is canceled

  • Volunteer and outreach activities are paused

  • Foster families will continue caring for animals already placed in foster homes, with guidance from Animal Services staff

  • Emergency and public safety-related animal calls will continue under modified protocols

The County has also implemented enhanced sanitation and containment measures, including HEPA air filtration around isolation areas.

Updates will be shared as additional information becomes available.
