SPRING LAKE, N.C. — The Town of Spring Lake has lifted the boil water advisory, issued on Sept. 13, 2026, for all Spring Lake water system customers.
Laboratory analysis of water samples collected on Sept. 12 and 13 show no evidence of total coliform bacteria or E. coli. Customers no longer need to boil water for human consumption.
The advisory was in effect following a repeat sample collected on Sept. 11, 2026, that tested positive for E. coli. Subsequent testing conducted by Cameron Laboratories and the Harnett Regional Water laboratory confirmed that both samples from the affected home were negative. Additional precautionary sampling performed throughout the Spring Lake water system, including areas not near the affected site, also returned negative results.
All 10 samples collected on Sept. 13 were reported clear of contamination at 7:30 a.m. on Sept. 14, 2026.
Although the system has tested free and clear of contamination, the following is advised for residents as normal water use resumes:

Run faucets for a total of 10 minutes to introduce fresh system water throughout household plumbing.

Discard any drinks, food or ice prepared during the boil water advisory.

Rewash any drink or food contact items (cookware, plates, utensils, etc.) using cleared system water.

Check and replace water filters in refrigerators, sinks or other appliances if needed.

Avoid using water from hot water heaters for drinking until several tank exchanges have occurred.

Run dishwasher through one or two empty cycles before washing dishes.

If returning home after several days away, run taps for a period to remove stagnant water and bring in fresh water from the watermains.
The Spring Lake office of the Cumberland County Department of Public Health and Spring Lake Community Library will reopen for regular hours Tuesday, Sept. 15.
