State Board Advises Residents Ahead of 2026 Election Season

Jun 5, 2026, 09:01 AM by Sade' Wilson

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The North Carolina State Board of Elections is encouraging residents to stay informed about voter registration drives and large‑scale mailings that may increase as the 2026 mid-term election season and Election Day approach.

The State Board supports efforts to engage voters, while noting that some unsolicited communications may be confusing. The following guidance is provided to help residents navigate voter registration activities and election‑related mailings.

Voter Registration Drives

Many organizations are conducting voter registration drives ahead of the 2026 general election. Residents are advised to keep the following in mind:

  • Voter registration status can be checked at any time through the State Board’s online Voter Search tool.

  • Re‑registration is not required for voters who are already registered.

  • State and County elections officials do not conduct door‑to‑door outreach. Anyone claiming to be an elections worker should provide identification.

  • Registration forms collected at drives may be returned directly to the County Board of Elections by mail or in person; returning forms to drive organizers is not required.

  • Registration workers should verify their identities and organizational affiliations upon request. Concerns may be reported to the State Board’s Investigations Division at 919-814‑0700, by emailing investigations.sboe@ncsbe.gov or by submitting an Election Law Complaint Form.

Mass Mailings

Advocacy groups, political parties and candidates often send voter registration materials by mail. This June, the Voter Participation Center (VPC) and the Center for Voter Information (CVI) are sending approximately 370,000 mailings to North Carolina residents. These mailings are typically sent to newly eligible 18‑year‑olds, individuals who have moved recently and households where unregistered voters may reside.

Residents with questions about these mailings are encouraged to contact the sending organization directly. Each letter includes a code that may be used to request removal from future mailings by emailing unsubscribe@voterparticipation.org (VPC) or unsubscribe@centerforvoterinformation.org (CVI). Removal requests may also be made by phone at 757-793‑2671 (VPC) or 757-664‑9066 (CVI).

Additional Reminders

  • Questions or concerns about a specific mailing should be directed to the organization that sent it. Many mailings include contact and “unsubscribe” information.

  • Registered voters who receive registration materials do not need to take any action and may discard the mailing.

  • Information about voter registration in North Carolina is available at ncsbe.gov under the “Registering” section.

  • The regular voter registration deadline for the Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, general election is Friday, Oct. 9, 2026. Cumberland County residents who miss this deadline may register and vote simultaneously at any early voting site within the County during the early voting period.
